Employment Hero - Building a Two-sided Marketplace
Task Background
This is a product test from Employment Hero when I apply for the Product Owner vacancy. Let’s take a look at the background and requirements first:
The Employment Hero team are working hard to build a two-sided marketplace featuring both employers on our platform (B2B), and the broader consumers (B2C) we service
Our consumers are made up of candidates applying for new jobs, and employees on our platform
We service over 80,000 employers (B2B), and 750,000 consumers (B2C)
On the B2B side, our typical organisation ranges 20-50 employees across hospitality, retail, and healthcare
On the B2C side, our typical consumer earns ~$70k p.a and is ~40 years old
Case study questions:
Which aspect of the marketplace build would you prioritise first – building supply (B2B) or building demand (B2C)? Why?
What initiative(s) would you focus on to scale your prioritised choice? How would you prioritise these initiative(s)?
What do you foresee as the greatest challenge to implementing this marketplace? How would you solve for this?
What would your goals be over the next 12 months?
My approach and answers
After carefully read the case study, I have some questions that need their clarification. I’ll list them here:
Just to confirm, we are talking about building an eCommerce platform (Marketplace), where we sell products like Amazon?
You mentioned ‘candidates applying for new jobs’ but I’m not sure who they are? Are they the users on Global Teams? Please share with me more information on this
By ‘Employers (B2B)’, you mean the companies/businesses that are using Employment Hero?
I assume the consumer yearly income (~$70k) is in AUD?
The submitted file is meant to be read, not presented?
After everything is clear, I proceed with my research and brainstorming.
To find the ideas/inspiration, I watched real cases on the internet about Facebook marketplace, AirBnB, and Employment Hero competitors. I also read the Market reports on this industry to have more insights. After a week, here is my answer. In the file above, you can find detail answer to all questions, as well as the roadmap to implement it.
